I.Q. BONEHEAD

SUMMARY

Fall 1991—Almost a decade after I first picked up the guitar, I finally was ready to form my band. I had more than enough songs, and playing lead guitar in Savage Gulf in the late 80s had given me confidence that it would be both fulfilling to myself and enjoyable for others. Not wanting to suffer the power struggles that plagued other bands that I had played in, I named myself leader and chose the band’s name, after an old cartoon character called T.V. Funnelhead. Alas, the name was not well-liked, and turned out to be too similar to that of another, more established local band: The Boneheadz.

Having Fred in the band was a real blessing for me. He carried most of the weight of lead guitar, was a stronger vocalist than I, and had some songs to contribute. We alternated singing lead, and our years of playing together allowed us to develop a nice counterpoint. With Pete and Larry, we had a strong, versatile rhythm section that could play in a variety of styles convincingly… and great guys with whom to hang.

After IQB ran its course, Pete was still interested in playing together. He brought his acoustic guitar and the name Pillow Regime. We had a few gigs, which were nice but nothing special. It was primarily a way to keep the faith until our next band: The Venerable Beads.
