RECORD INFO LINER NOTES I wanted to include a few I.Q. Bonehead live cuts in this collection, so I retrieved the cassette of our 1993 gig at Oh, Riley’s in Manchester, Connecticut. All I could recollect were that the mirror-lined stage was unusual: very wide and fairly shallow. Pete set up in the corner, Larry had the other flank, and Fred and I were stationed in the middle. I tapped Fred’s memory recently, and he recalled that Toy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band had passed away the night before (for some strange reason, Southern rock is big in CT). We both remembered the crowd was small on that wintery Tuesday night. Listening to the first set, I became increasingly impressed with how good the band sounded. Only “Planet Texas” and “Lancelot” were a little weak. The second set was even better, with “Godfrey Spy” being the lone offender (an out-of-tune guitar). The third set added more to the bounty, and I decided that this gig merited having its own CD. Now, to fit almost three sets of music onto one CD meant some songs had to be omitted. I wanted to include the songs written by Fred and Larry, since they were an important part of our repertoire. I tried to avoid a lot of overlap with The Venerable Beads’ live recording New London Calling (Vol.8), so two songs from the second set (”Falling” and “Cash in My Chips”) were bumped to BackScraps 1996–1990 (Vol.11). After the editing, I still needed to cut one more. A pretty good rendition of “Aboard My Dream” was the final casualty. The next issue: I wanted to keep the sets separated and to keep the original song order. More importantly, I wanted the CD song order to reflect our custom of alternating lead vocals. Thus, “Little Datsun” was moved up one slot and “Beechtree” was moved up three slots. And the “banter” inserts were severely detached from their point of origin. I hope this CD bears testimony that I.Q. Bonehead was a good little live band, especially considering how infrequently we got together to rehearse. Thankfully, the talents and enthusiasm of Pete, Fred and Larry—three all-around great guys—made playing together a real joy. Though I was the band’s founder and nominal leader, I was the weakest link. But hey… I had the rehearsal space and the toys, and a few songs they enjoyed playing. If only I was a better promoter… | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
